KP AGREES TO ALLIANCE CALLS TO RESTORE COVID SICK LEAVE BENEFIT
July 9th, 2020 –
After weeks of discussions with the Alliance and other unions, KP has agreed to restore the COVID sick leave benefit through September 30. It will be retroactive to when the benefit earlier expired on June 15. The Alliance has consistently advocated for an extension of COVID benefits, and we want to acknowledge KP for listening to workers’ need for peace of mind should they need COVID sick leave while working in very challenging and ever-changing conditions.
The COVID sick leave benefit provides additional sick leave of up to 80 hours for employees sick with COVID confirmed by a positive test. If the employee is sent home and is waiting for a test or for test results, the employee will be eligible for COVID leave for any day they are waiting to be tested and while they wait to receive the results (see attachment for details). Even if the COVID test turns out negative, the time before the test result is received will be covered by COVID leave. The employee won’t be penalized for a lack of testing, or delay in testing results. The hours are prorated based on actual hours worked. The hours an employee qualifies for must be taken by October 31, 2020.
